Chapter 1 part 2: The ever-smiling Kim Miso
Translated by Fei斐 & proofread by Fanie and Iping

    "Secretary Kim!"

After some time had passed, the execution was finally over and Young-joon called Secretary Kim out loud from inside.

    "Yes, sir!"

Secretary Kim turned to Director Bong's Secretary and gave her an advice with a smile.

"Please don't side with Director Bong in front of Vice President Lee."

Director Bong's Secretary imagined what's going on inside when she heard the sound of something being poured out, then stuttered as she asked Secretary Kim with tension and worry.

    "W-why?"

Secretary Kim smiled then replied, "Do you want to be buried together with Director Bong?"

    "N-no."

She swallowed hard while shaking her head. But Secretary Kim's next words made her widen her eyes.

"Go inside and get rid of Director Bong. I'll take care of the rest."

    "Pardon...?"

Even though she did not have the time to listen to further explanations, the woman immediately understood what Secretary Kim meant when the door was opened.

The Marketing Director's office was looking like it had just been hit by some mighty Tornado.

Amidst messy papers and shipwreck-looking furnitures, Lee Young-joon sat on the desk in a charming manner like a carved sculpture. Meanwhile, Director Bong was curled up in one corner with a pathetic appearance.

The woman who witnessed the true face of Vice President Lee, whom she had only heard from passing rumors, was stunned with her mouth open and gave Secretary Kim a glance.

Secretary Kim quickly cleaned up the scattered documents, swept and threw away the broken and damaged furnitures, then returned the other remaining furnitures to its original places. When Lee Young-joon took out a cigarette and was about to put it on his lips, Secretary Kim immediately grabbed the cigarette from his hand with a smile.

"Eyy, you said it yourself that smoking in office room is prohibited."

    "Just this once."

    "No way."

    "Tsk."

Lee Young-joon chuckled and slowly moved away, draped his suit jacket on one side of his arm and left the room.

A short period of time after he left, Secretary Kim finished tidying the room. She walked towards Director Bong, who had been curled up in a corner all this time, and lowered her body.

    "Director Bong."

    "Se.. Secretary Kim.... I... I.....So......."

Secretary Kim stretched out her hand and patted Director Bong's shoulder.

"I will try to talk to Vice President Lee. He did this out of compassion, so I hope you won't be too sad. There's no way he could do this without any compassion, right? All of this was done for Director Bong's sake too."

Hearing Secretary Kim's words, which gave him some reassurance, Director Bong slowly raised his head and looked at Secretary Kim with his eyes wet with tears.

    "Re- really?"

"Of course. Now you go home and rest first, don't stop by in strange places. Your wife must be sad and humiliated, right?"

"That's right. Ha.... Maybe I'm crazy. Why did i do that during working hours...?"

"Now, don't forget about this moment and live harder, Director Bong."

    "Yes. Thank you, Secretary Kim."

"Fighting*, Director Bong. Hang in there!

(*T/N: Fighting in this context means Cheer up!)

Secretary Kim's cheering face with a warm smile was like the face of Virgin Mary statue at the church door.

Thanks to Secretary Kim's warm consolation, Director Bong got up and walked out of this full-of-despair-room. He walked pass his secretary, who was standing in silence in the middle of the room, then shouted embarrassing words.

"Miss Oh! Come on, come on! Let's give it one last try! Fireeeee!!"

    "Ah.... Ye, yes.... fight......ing."

Seeing the back of Director Bong, who was walking further away, the secretary turned towards Secretary Kim and asked.

"Will Director Bong still be able to continue working here?"

"Geez, what kind of question is that. Have you ever seen Vice President Lee gives someone second chances?"

After saying so, she went to speak on the phone in a low voice.

"This is Secretary Kim Miso. I've sorted things out here. Before Vice President Lee comes to check again, please remove the table and other furnitures immediately. Please hurry up."

Among many executives and secretaries in Yoo-il Group, she was often referred as the master secretary— a human cultural asset in secretarial world. All because of one reason.

She was a perfect match for the one and only Lee Young-joon. Even their tacit understanding was more of a husband and wife, especially because of the things that could be done with her smile.

***

Late at night, on the way home after a meeting at the German embassy.

When the car stopped at a red light, Young-joon's gaze, that had been staring out of the car's window, turned to the beautiful woman who was sitting beside him.

Secretary Kim Mi-so wore a modern Hanbok* dress with open shoulders and her hair, which was usually tied up, was left loose. She looked much more beautiful and charming than in a formal suit.

(*T/N: Hanbok is a Korean traditional clothes.

I suppose Mi-so's dress tonight was styled somewhat like this ☺)

Remembering back, in the meeting earlier, when Young-joon went away for a while to chat with his business partners, there were several men looking like Germans approached Mi-so for a talk.

"You're full of surprises, aren't you, Mi-so? When did you learn Germany?"

    "What are you talking about?"

"Earlier, those men approached you. You were talking with them for quite a long time."

"Ahh. Those people." She shyly laughed while covering her mouth. "Two of them are German and one is French. It's pretty hard to communicate in English."

    "Even French?"

When facing Young-joon, who was staring at her with a surprised gaze, Secretary Kim muttered in a low voice, "I barely managed to learn Japanese and Chinese after you insisted amidst my busy life assisting you, when would I have the time to learn German or French? It's all my wittiness"

    "Wittiness?"

"When the person offers me a champagne, it should mean 'Would you like to chat a bit?'. They're most likely to talk about the weather if they looked out the window, it's nothing important, so I can just ignore that. Then, if they are talking as they look at me, it is most likely a compliment, so I can go on with a smile and a nod. Lastly, if it looks like they're trying to hit on me, I will touch my earring with my left hand."

On Secretary Kim's left ring finger was a ring with simple design— a gold ring— a gift from the company's sports competition two years ago.

(I'm inserting this convo from the drama:

"Why is it your left hand?"

"When I show them my ring, everything gets sorted out.")

"Wittiness is the key to many things. Even a language barrier can be handled well by me."

    "You are amazing."

    "Really?"

    "Yes."

"Are you praising me right now?"

"Someone who is said to have a great wit doesn't understand that this is a compliment?"

Young-joon smiled and Secretary Kim started clapping her hands together.

"Goodness, I got a compliment from Vice President Lee at last."

"It's not like I'm someone who is thingy with compliments. It's just that there isn't much for me to praise."

Maybe his words sounded a little arrogant, but if you thought about it deeper, there was indeed a fact in it. From Lee Young-joon's point of view, there might not be many people who was amazing.

"It's all thanks to you, sir."

    "Is that so?"

    "Of course."

Young-joon suddenly remembered that he couldn't pay special attention to the woman beside him  because of his recent busy schedule.

"Anyway, well done today. Is there something that you want?"

    "It's okay, sir."

"I'm also okay to buy something for you, so just tell me whatever you want."

"Last month you have already bought me an expensive designer bag."

"Last month I bought you a designer bag? Is it not shoes?"

"As I expected, you will never remember."

While waving her hand, Secretary Kim smiled and called Young-joon, "Vice President Lee."

    "Yes."

"You should post a job vacancy ad as soon as possible."

    "What?"

    "Job vacancy ad."

Secretary Kim continued as she kept on smiling, "I am going to quit now."

    "Why so suddenly?"

    "Well, it's for personal reason."

"Does that reason really require you to stop working?"

    "Yes."

For a moment, Young-joon stared at the woman beside him, then shrugged his shoulders and said expressionlessly.

"Alright. If you want to do so."
